New submissions to the library from andreatsurumi (andreatsurumi.com)!

I had a real treat the other day when I discovered Catherine Kidd's Hyena Subpoena in my mailbox. The first book I ever made for Conundrum Press (1996) was Kidd’s everything I know about love I learned from taxidermy, and Conundrum went on to publish three more of her books. She is one of the smartest writers I have ever had the pleasure to meet. Seeing her perform in the nineties was one of the crucial factors in me wanting to be a publisher. Anyway Conundrum has moved on to graphic novels and one of the drawbacks to this is not getting to work with old friends like Catherine. I am so happy she put this package out with the help of Kiva Stimac and Popolo Press (http://www.popolopress.com/). It really is a beautiful package, gorgeously designed and thoughtfully considered. It is a much better job than I could ever have done. It comes with a CD and listening to Kidd’s powerful voice transported me. Her pieces here are her most personal and vulnerable to date yet they seamlessly continue her anthropomorphic exercises in philosophy. Combined with a subtle soundscape by Barcelona-based Jacky Murda. Hopefully this package will see some wider distribution.

Please note on the cover there is a tag line which claims information about HALIFAX’s new zine library. But Halifax has the Anchor Zine Archive. We are located in the picturesque Annapolis Valley!

The Annapolis Valley Zine Library recently supported Retrofit Comics toward their 2013 subscription. The return of the alt-comic format is worthy of support, especially since there are fewer and fewer places to distribute them. The January and February offerings showed up together. By Sam Alden and publisher and artist Box Brown. More to come. Check out their list for yourself.http://retrofitcomics.com/

Donation: two mini comics by andyhoodhood! Thanks Andy!

Donations are coming in! Recently the library received This Insane Life, Mad Pride Hamilton's occasional zine. From the masthead: “This Insane Life is a zine written and created entirely by people who suffer from and /or experience mental illness and saneism, identify as mad, insane, crazy, nuts, or neurologically atypical, are service users and refusers.”

Gaspereau Press author Dana Mills pays a visit to the AVZL.Here he is checking out the suitcase. This is what I take to schools when I give presentations. How do collections of zines become a book? Also note the first ever Conundrum book up front, everything I know about love I learned from taxidermy by Catherine Kidd. Missing from this photo is the cassette that came with it. Remember cassettes?
